5.1a Use card catalogs and computer databases to locate sources for research topics.






To prepare to teach this lesson, load the PowerPoint presentation. Print the Research 5.1a pdf. Make a copy of pages 7-12 for every student. This lesson will take longer than one hour for sixth graders. You may want to consider doing it over two days or cutting down the number of reading passages you use for practice.

5.1b: Access information from a variety of primary and secondary sources to gather information for research topics.






To prepare to teach this lesson, load the PowerPoint file onto your computer. Print off the pdf file as your lesson plan. From that you will need the following copies:
  • pages 10-11-Class set front and back
  • pages 12-13-one for each student-do 12 on front and 13 on back.
  • pages 14-15-Class set front and back
  • pages 16-17-Class set front and back

5.1c: Use organizational strategies as an aid to comprehend increasingly difficult content material.



5.1d: Note instances of persuasion, propaganda, faulty reasoning, or misleading information in text.

Note: This is 7th grade standard 5.1f. The notes and handout say 7th grade. You may want to change that to 6th grade. Make a copy of the worksheet for every student and load the PowerPoint onto your computer for presentation.


5.2a: Record, organize, and display relevant information fropm multiple sources in systematic ways (e.g. outlines, graphic organizers, or note cards).


5.2b: Identify credit the reference sources used to gain information.


5.2c: Determine the appropriateness of an information source for a research topic.


5.2d: Summarize information from multiple sources into a research paper.
